Fly fishing in a gigantic nature in Alberta, Canada

Instagram photo number three from Fabisch fly fishing

The Athabasca River at Jasper in Alberta

Here I am on the Athabasca River, not far from the city of Jasper in Alberta, Canada. Unfortunately I didn't have much time to fish as I still had a date with the Bow River near Calgary. But it was enough for a few rainbow trout.

The nature around Jasper is just breathtaking like in many other places. If you have the opportunity, just have a look there.

Angling or fly fishing, is there a difference?

How elite is fly fishing still?

is there a difference?

Actually, angling is the term that combines almost all possible variations of non-commercial fishing. Fly fishing is only a very small part compared to other types of fishing.

Fly fishing on the Doubs

Picture of the week, Fabisch Fly Fishing, Week 03 -  2020

The mill in the picture was our accommodation many years ago

Fly fishing on the Doubs is certainly not easy, but it is one of the rivers that should be visited. However, it makes sense to familiarize yourself with the local rules beforehand.

Created by the Lillach, tufa terraces in Franconia

It is hard to believe what small streams in Franconia are able to build up over time. These tufa terraces were created by a small stream, the Lillach. The entire habitat around the Lillach has surprises in the area of fauna and flora.

Mother Nature does not always play along

Weekly picture at Fabisch Fly Fishing, Week 49 -  2019

Being in the water is life-threatening

Unfortunately, or fortunately, you can not choose the water conditions. It is a pity, however, when the news reports on such circumstances, when you are already on site. There were a total of 800 km traveled for nothing. The next time it will be better again.

The early morning in the Alps invites you to let the soul dangle

Weekly picture at Fabisch Fly Fishing, Week 45 -  2019

Enjoy the silence to the fullest

In the early morning no cars whiz through the Salzach valley, the silence is perfect. The slow drift of the morning mist reinforces the impression of absolute calm. As the day starts late at this time of the year, getting up early is not necessary to gain this experience. Of the weekdays, however, the Sunday is the most appropriate to let the soul dangle !

Weekly picture at Fabisch Fly Fishing, Week 39 -  2019

The Salzach in September

Weekly picture at Fabisch Fly Fishing, Week 37 -  2019

Only good nerves help

Normally, September is a rather quiet month when it comes to the weather. But it can also be different. Heavy rain can make a river unfishable, in the Alps, the rain in the higher regions remains as snow. Shortly thereafter, the temperature increases again and the snow thaws. As a result, the river can´t be used for a longer time. In this situation only good nerves help and time, before you put yourself in danger!

Very often I have already experienced the approach to Vancouver, such an opportunity as in this year to take pictures is pretty rare. So direct on the west coast you have always to expect rain or heavy cloud formation.

The Wiesent River and the Weather

Weekly picture at Fabisch Fly Fishing, Week 35 -  2019

Like last year, our waters are suffering from water scarcity.

The Wiesent in Franconia is in the lower part still reasonably fine. Opposite to that situation, smaller waters are already lacking in water. Especially the upper parts are strongly affected. It's time for the government to think about the future, preferably before it's too late.

Here at Dawson City, the Yukon is already a very big river
On the right is Dawson City, in the middle you can see the ferry

In Whitehorse the Yukon is still a relatively small river. Here, at Dawson City, many large rivers have already drained into the Yukon, such as the Stewart River, the Pelly River to name the largest. Rivers like the Pelly, which are almost exclusively fed by glaciers, ensure a visible cloudiness of the yukon over the whole summer.

Weekly picture at Fabisch Fly Fishing, Week 33 -  2019

Better you will not fall into the water in this area...

The Yukon is full of natural beauty. This canyon landscape is just a few miles from Whitehorse, the capital of the Yukon. For swimming, this water is not suitable, the current is incredibly strong. Those who fall in there will only survive with a lot of luck. The massive number of warning signs speaks for itself.

a place in the Yukon, Pelly Crossing
Pelly Crossing on the Pelly River
The drive from Vancouver to the north seems endless. Here at Pelly Crossing we are already 2700 km away from Vancouver. Nature clearly has the upper hand. Anyone who disappears from the scene here will hardly be found anywhere. This can be a bit depressing, but also a great opportunity to get to know yourself a little better.

The highways in northwestern Canada

Not all highways in northwestern Canada look like this. This one is one of the good ones that brings you to the end of the world. Unfortunately, there is the risk of losing his windshield by falling rocks from other vehicles, quite large.

EFFA Open 2019 - International Fly Tying Contest

The Christmas rush and New Year’s Day being over, it’s about time we return to our normal routines. Time to think about EFFA’s fly tying event! The EFFA Open Fly Tying Competition started in 2012 and has developed into a regular event. The conditions of participation have been slightly modified for 2019.

Fly Tying Competition
Fly Tying

EFFA would like to encourage tiers that don’t tie every single day to participate in our competition. For this reason professional tiers are excluded from competing. Maybe there will also be a class for professionals to compete in the future.
We still have 4 weeks to the closing date, February 17th, 2019. So you better get out your vise and start tying!

Have fun tying, and may your flies be winners!

The End of Fly Fishing in 2018?

Weekly picture at Fabisch Fly Fishing, Week 50 2018

In waters like this, the fly fishing season is over. Similar waters with grayling are depending on the country (in Germany in states), still open. Now it goes on with fly tying, and rods and reels cleaning. Of course, there is a little bit of dreaming about what and where to catch next year.

( Fly ) Fishing in Difficult Terrain

Weekly picture at Fabisch Fly Fishing, Week 47 2018

( Fly ) Fishing in Difficult Terrain

Whether fishing or fly fishing, or just hiking or with the camera, such a terrain should not be underestimated. If such a landscape is located far from populated areas, it is necessary that somebody knows where you are and when you will be back. This is the only way to search for anybody in an emergency reason.
